What is Math Kangaroo?

Math Kangaroo is an annual international math competition held in over 90 countries, including the United States. Its mission is to promote a love for mathematics through engaging and creative multiple-choice problems that emphasize logic, reasoning, and strategic thinking.

Unlike traditional contests focused on speed or advanced topics, Math Kangaroo encourages exploration and imagination across a wide range of grade levels—from 1st to 12th grade.

Who Can Participate?

Any student in grades 1 through 12 can participate. Students are grouped by grade level and take a test designed specifically for their age group. There are no prerequisite qualifications—Math Kangaroo welcomes all students who enjoy solving problems and thinking critically.

When Is It Held?

The Math Kangaroo contest takes place every year on the **third Thursday in March**. Registration typically opens in **September** and closes in **mid-December**.

Students can take the contest **in-person at a center** or **online** if virtual options are available.

Contest Format

• Grades 1–4: 24 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes
• Grades 5–12: 30 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes

Each problem is worth 3, 4, or 5 points depending on its difficulty level. There is **no penalty for incorrect answers**, encouraging students to attempt every problem.

How to Register

Students must register through the official Math Kangaroo USA website. Parents can create an account and register their children for either in-person or online sessions. You can choose a nearby center, a school, or even an online group when available.

Registration opens each fall and fills up quickly, so early registration is recommended.

How to Prepare

The best way to prepare for Math Kangaroo is by solving past contests and practicing logical reasoning. Problems often involve patterns, geometry, number puzzles, and creative problem-solving—not just straightforward arithmetic.
