What is mathleague.org?
mathleague.org is a nationwide mathematics competition platform offering contests for students from elementary through high school. Known for its challenging yet accessible problems and inclusive structure, mathleague.org runs hundreds of contests annually, both in-person and online.
These contests are designed to develop problem-solving skills, foster a competitive spirit, and prepare students for higher-level contests such as MATHCOUNTS, AMC, and AIME.
Who Can Participate?
mathleague.org hosts events for students in grades 3–12, with divisions grouped by grade level:
- Elementary: Grades 3–6
- Middle School: Grades 6–8
- High School: Grades 9–12
Students may compete individually or as part of a school or enrichment center team.
Contest Format
Each mathleague.org event typically consists of the following rounds:
- Number Sense: Mental math round without calculators, emphasizing speed and accuracy.
- Sprint Round: 30 questions in 40 minutes with no calculators. Focused on problem solving and logic.
- Target Round: 8 questions given in pairs with time limits per pair. Calculators are allowed.
- Team Round: For teams of four; 10 questions in 20 minutes. Collaboration and strategy are key.
- Countdown Round: Optional fast-paced buzzer-style oral round for top scorers.
Formats may vary slightly depending on the contest level (elementary, middle, or high school).
When Are Contests Held?
mathleague.org hosts contests throughout the academic year. Each season typically runs from September to May, with opportunities to qualify for:
- Regional and State Championships
- National Championships (typically held in May)
- International Championships for top U.S. and global students
Students may participate in multiple qualifying contests throughout the season.
Awards and Advancement
Top-performing students in each contest may receive medals, certificates, and eligibility to compete at higher-level championships. mathleague.org recognizes both individual and team achievements at each level of competition.
